Redefining Femininity: A Revolutionary Approach to Fashion

Carrie Wu's Innovative Collection Challenges Traditional Notions of Femininity

The concept behind "Redefine Femininity" was inspired by the societal norms of the eighteenth century, where a woman's dress was a symbol of her status and a tool for attracting men. Wu sought to portray the sexual and romantic side of women in a powerful and assertive manner. The collection is a tribute to sculptural fashion, with Iris Van Herpen and Alexander McQueen cited as her inspirations.

What sets "Redefine Femininity" apart is its innovative approach to the silhouette of the clothing. Traditionally, tight-fitted and hourglass shapes have been associated with femininity and sex appeal. However, Wu challenges this notion by introducing outrageous or flat rectangular shapes, devoid of any darts and seams. This bold move aims to highlight a woman's individual traits and personalities through the modern and unusual shapes of the clothing.

The collection incorporates modern technology and innovative techniques to achieve its unique aesthetic. Laser cutting is used to create cut-out designs that reveal different parts of the body, adding a layer of sexuality to the designs. The use of 3D modeling and draping techniques, in conjunction with laser cutting, results in voluminous and interesting forms. The key materials used in the collection are bonded fabric for the laser cut patterns and neoprene for creating shapes.

The design process involved extensive experimentation with sketches and patterns. Wu created her own patterns for the laser cut designs, testing them on paper before finalizing them for the laser cut machine. The use of rivets to create 3-dimensional forms and the application of draping techniques were also crucial elements in the design process.

The "Redefine Femininity" collection was developed as part of Wu's final MA project, spanning from February to September 2016. The project involved extensive research into the history of corsetry, including archival research at "The Clothworkers" center, part of the V&A museum in London. The collection was also influenced by the V&A's exhibition "Undressed: A Brief History of Underwear".

The collection has been recognized for its innovative approach to fashion, winning the Silver A' Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and are admired for their strong technical characteristics and artistic skill.
